Building Commissioner & Zoning Enforcement Officer
About the role
The Building Commissioner and Zoning Enforcement Officer is responsible for planning, organizing, conducting and supervising inspection work, to enforce the provisions of the state building code and Chapter 22, Section 13A to ensure compliance with life safety, structural, light, ventilation and other pertinent local bylaws. The Building Commissioner and Zoning Enforcement Officer oversees the issuance of required permits applicable to building construction, reviews plans for zoning compliance, and serves as enforcement officer for the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or a master-craftsman’s level of building construction trade knowledge;
- Five to seven (5-7) years of prior work experience preferably in the construction trades; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licensing and credential requirements
- Valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (driver's license)
- CORI certification (background check)
- Massachusetts Construction Supervisors License
- Inspector of Buildings/Building Commissioner certification
- Certification from the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BMS)
Salary and benefits
- Anticipated Starting Salary: $82,885 to $90,044.11
- Full Salary range: $82,885 to $111,895 per year (Grade 11)
