Town of Halifax - Monponsett Pond - Algae Treatment - June 4-6

Hi folks,

Lycott Environmental, working with the Town of Halifax, will be treating West Monponsett Pond on Tuesday, June 4 through Thursday, June 6 with the chemical aluminum sulfate. This chemical binds with phosphorous, one of the nutrients for algae. By binding the phosphorous, the amount of nutrients available for the algae is reduced and thereby reduces the amount of algae growth.

I expect that Lycott will have some equipment at the Lingan Street boat ramp by the end of Monday, June 3 in order that they can begin work as early as possible on Tuesday, June 4.

Work will begin on Tuesday, June 4 in the southern part of West Monponsett Pond with operations staged from the Lingan Street boat ramp. I expect that Lycott will have a port-a-potty at this location. On Wednesday, operations will move to the State Boat Ramp on Route 58/Monponsett Street and will either continue there on Thursday or be staged from a location in Hanson.

The Town will be asking boaters not to use West Monponsett Pond during these three days in order to obtain the maximum benefit from the treatment. The Town is not "pulling over" or fining anyone, but simply asking that boaters refrain from using West Monponsett given that they will receive much of the benefit.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thanks,
