The Town of Halifax seeks candidates for the position of Patrol Officer in the Halifax Police Department. Successful candidates will be expected to perform routine and specialized law enforcement work to protect lives and property, prevent and suppress crimes within the community, and carry out the enforcement of state and federal laws and local Bylaws.  The successful candidate will have a community policing oriented approach.  The full-time position is a 40-hour week position.  Currently, the Officers work schedule is 8-hour shifts, 4 on and 2 off.

Compensation is based on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the pay schedule of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.  The Town offers 3 personal days, longevity pay, night shift differential, 15 sick days per year, and matches health insurance premiums at 50%.  The Halifax Police Department is proactive and encourages continuing education and training opportunities for all Officers.  Robust educational incentives are available for those applicants possessing a college degree within Criminal Justice or related fields. The Town and Department take great pride in supplying its First Responders with excellent equipment.  Full-time, certified Officers are represented by the Halifax Association of Police Patrolmen, Mass Cop Local 292.

Ideal candidates will be motivated to work and interact with the community, with an ability to demonstrate a community policing mindset. Opportunities exist for specialized units in the Department and with the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC) specialized units such as SWAT, Search and Rescue, Motorcycle and others dependent upon experience, interest, and qualifications.

Requirements

  • The successful candidate must be at least 21 years old, nonsmoker or tobacco user,
  • Applicant must be U.S. Citizen.
  • Must not be a convicted felon or have any equivalent convictions that would be a felony in Massachusetts.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED, Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred. 
  • Full-time Massachusetts Police Training Commission (MPTC) Academy or Bridge Academy and POST C certification is preferred but not required. (NOTE) A passing score of 70% of an examination conducted by www.getbadged.com is required for those applicants with no Academy Certification.
  • Candidates shall be required to meet specific medical and physical ability test (PAT), an extensive background check, and a psychological examination. 
  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts LTC class A and driver’s license.
