Monponsett Pond - Algae Results - November 21

On Monday, November 21st, MassDEP collected water samples from both East and West Monponsett Ponds.  The samples were analyzed by MassDEP on November 15th.  The East Monponsett sample collected at the Rt 36 boat ramp in Halifax showed no cyanobacteria.  The West Monponsett Pond samples showed cyanobacteria levels of 1,177 cells/ml at the 4th Avenue beach, 1,182 cells/ml at the state boat ramp, and 4,138 cells/ml at Ocean Ave beach.  All of these levels are below the MDPH guideline of 70,000 cells/ml.

According to MDPH guidelines, samples collected a week apart with levels below the guidelines are required before the advisory should be lifted. The results above are the second set of low samples for West Monponsett Pond and therefore West Monponsett Pond is now open.

Pond levels are lower than normal because Halifax received very little rain from June to September. According to the United State Drought Monitor, Halifax is located in the region marked "Moderate Drought". The low level of the Pond is not due to the Brockton Water Department diverting water during these four months as they did not divert during these months.
